Why I Look Forward to Bush's Reelection

Betcha' that title got your attention!

What this does mean, however, is that if Bush is reelected, I will not consider it the end of history. I will not emigrate abroad, won't consider America finished, I won't even be mildly disappointed. Instead, I will look to the future with optimism, preparing to utilize Bush's unintentional assistance in organizing a mass 'regime change' movement -in the true and very literal sense of the term.

28 July 2004

Unlike America's political elite, I have always despised al-Qaeda. Even back in the 1980s and early 1990s, when successive US administrations were funding and actively cooperating with Osama bin Laden and his cronies, I regarded the bearded Saudi to be a dangerous fascist theocrat. I mention this because, to my utter surprise, I recently discovered something that al-Qaeda fanatics and I have in common: the concealed desire to see George W. Bush return to the White House following the November elections.

Ever since the Madrid train bombing last March, statements circulating on behalf of various al-Qaeda front groups around the world contain brief remarks about their desire to see Bush command the 'infidels' for four more years. The reason, of course, is simple: al-Qaeda's minions are convinced that the only possible context for the Arab world's relationship with the West is one of aggression and war. Bush's strategy of global domination echoes and encourages these convictions.

In this respect, Islamist fundamentalists won't necessarily be sorry to see Bush defeated in the 2004 elections, especially with the war in Iraq being a major US election issue. Yet al-Qaeda leaders know that, in the long run, they have much more to gain from the continued presence of Republican neo-conservatives in the Oval Office. Not only has Bush's arrogant and self-destructive 'war on terrorism' divided America, it has also created deep strategic cracks among Western powers. Furthermore, continuing US aggression is rapidly radicalizing Muslim populations, driving thousands of angry youth into the open arms of fundamentalist groups eager to exploit their rage. Thus the radical Islamists have strategic advantages to gain from a possible reelection of the Bush camp.

Ironically, the same could be said for America's future.

Most liberal observers consider the upcoming US elections as a matter of life and death -the last hope for deliverance from neo-conservative yoke before all of us are cast into utter darkness. The electoral war cry of anti-Bush organizers is the resounding "regime change begins at home".

This slogan, however, is as phony as George Bush's reasons for attacking Iraq. Te term 'regime' does not specify the politics of an elected administration. Regime is the mode of government, the form of rule. It follows that regime change does not mean a change in administration; it means a change in the way we are governed. In the particular case of the United States, a regime change, in the context of progressive representative politics, would imply radical, groundbreaking reform that would alter the very structure of the American governing system.

Regime change would be ending corporate lobbying once and for all, as well as curbing the influence of big money on our government. Regime change would be to prevent Congress from being taken over by an elected aristocracy of multimillionaire members, as most of them now are. Regime change would be to nationalize the health system, thus insuring once and for all the tens of millions its uninsured victims. Regime change would be to force corporations -not only the federal government- to institute and abide by a minimum wage of at least $20 an hour. Regime change would be to sign out of international trade treaties, force US-based corporations to pay taxes and forbid US-owned firms from fleeing abroad. Cutting military spending to the absolute minimum, eliminating all racist and sexist laws, disbanding the CIA and the other shadowy intelligence agencies, ending our government's support for totalitarian regimes abroad, increasing education expenditures to over 20 per cent of the national budget -all that would be regime change.

Now, getting John F. Kerry in the White House would be nice. It would be a breath of fresh air, a welcome break from the deeply reactionary policies of the Bushite fundamentalist gang. But 'regime change' it would not be. Progressive regime change is not brought about by wealthy New England politicians. It is brought about by a radicalized populace, fed up with injustice, inequality and corruption, and actively struggling to achieve it.

Another thing to consider is that profound regime change does not take place in a vacuum. It is usually the response of a people with its back against the wall. Additionally, regime change movements are sparked by the collective realization that traditional political channels are incapable of delivering the desired catharsis. Thus it can be said that the more oppressive and unresponsive a regime is, the more it encourages the idea of regime change among the governed.

Consider the rule of George W. Bush. His government is admittedly the most reactionary, repressive and unresponsive in modern times. Its foreign policy resume includes two major wars in the context of the broader 'war on terrorism'; two known instances of involvement in military coups against elected governments (Venezuela, Haiti); a continuous refusal to recognize the authority of international bodies (United Nations, UNICEF, World Court, World Health Organization, to name just a few); and the redeployment of Cold War modes of arms proliferation. Its domestic policy boasts the introduction of the most repressive union rights, civil rights and civil liberties restrictions since World War II; the proliferation of domestic intelligence activity against peace and justice groups; the country's worst economic performance in recent memory; as well as the weakest job market since the Great Depression.

Is it any wonder that Bush's rule has also witnessed the most advanced radicalization in American society since the 1960s? Union activity has already reached levels not noted since the late 1970s. The anti-war movement has picked up after nearly twenty-five years of inactivity with some of the largest demonstrations in history in virtually every major city. Progressive political documentaries like Michael Moore's Bowling for Columbine and Fahrenheit 9-11 are among the highest-grossing blockbusters in theatres all across the nation. The experience of the stolen votes in the last election has resulted in the most solid anti-Republican bloc of African-American voters in years. Ethnic and religious minority groups, such as Latinos and Arab-Americans are turning in droves against the Republicans, fearing the anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim overtones of Bush and his neo-conservative entourage. The women's and pro-choice movements, the environmental movement, the civil liberties movement, are all reporting the largest increase in membership numbers in nearly thirty years, as do most local peace and justice groups all over America. Huge national activist groups, such as MoveOn and United for Peace and Justice are challenging the way we do politics. Even such unlikely issues as electronic voting machines and no-fly lists are now rallying cries that stir hundreds of thousands of Americans.

George W. Bush's administration is the primary force responsible for this nearly unprecedented radicalization of America's middle class in the past three to four years. It may sound simplistic, but then politics often is: the goofy, flatfooted figure of George W. Bush is the best advertisement for the progressive cause. Another four years of him and his clowns, and the historical conditions will be ripe for another 1960s.

This does not mean that the Democratic alternative to Bush's despotism should be ignored. I, along with 99.9 percent of America's progressive voting bloc will cast my ballot for the Democrats. But I won't expect anything close to a regime change from PR-conscious John Kerry, who appears to regard his anti-war activism during the Vietnam conflict as a potential embarrassment, and whose campaign managers have already assured Israel of their unconditional support.

Irresponsible Conduct & Betrayal of a Country - An Open Letter to Sen. John McCain

Dear Senator McCain;

Yesterday I read your press release to the FEC accusing  the Chairman & Vice Chair of turning their backs on problems with the 527 groups, ignored the nation's campaign finance laws and undermined the interests and rights of the American people. This kind of irresponsible conduct is contrary to law and cannot be allowed to continue.”

So Senator McCain, let’s talk about “irresponsible conduct”,   “contrary to the law”  and “cannot be allowed to  continue”.

Senator McCain, our campaign finance laws aren’t going to be worth a “hill of beans” if George Bush, Karl Rove, Dick Cheney, et al are allowed to continue their takeover of this country.

George Bush was installed in this highest office of the land “contrary to the law” and he walked all over you in the process.  He did his utmost to destroy you so please don’t give me any of the hogwash about forgiving and forgetting because this is our country  we are talking about now.   It’s no longer just one man who got in the way of his Bush’s self-serving goals.   It’s the well being & survival  of our country, DAMMIT!

Bush’s “irresponsible conduct” has run rampant over this country and the whole world since he seized this office with your help.   Yes, you aided & abetted in the installation of the most despicable man in this country by accepting the Supreme Court decision to appoint their man to office without question.  You did this after you had witnessed first hand what this person and his handlers Karl Rove & Dick Cheney will do to achieve their goals.  Please don’t insult my intelligence by saying it was for the good of the country.  The country’s good is never served by having its electoral process hijacked.

Their “irresponsible conduct” has included an attack on everything  this country was built on,  honesty, decency, freedom of speech,  & a basic right to privacy to name a few.  This administration has led the attack on senior citizens, children, women, & most of all the military as they are murdered in an illegal & lie induced war.   Two defenseless countries lie in a state of destruction and squalor because the Congress of the United States shirked its duty and gave free reign to a dictator wannabe.

It’s hard to fathom which of his many actions are the most despicable.

The cuts to military families, schools, & housing, are just the tip of the iceberg.   Bush has even cut funding for training the National Guard & Reserves.   How in heaven’s name does he plan to continue his never-ending war without trained soldiers?

What about an education bill without proper funding?  “Screw you”, he told the kids as he patted them on the back in his photo-op.    What about senior citizens, Social Security, & Medicare?  “Screw you”, said Bush as he signed a despicable law that prohibits the search for lower cost medications & awarded his friends in the pharmaceutical business.

Wouldn’t it be truthful to say that every bill George Bush has signed rewards someone who has supported him while cutting the throats of  seniors, women, children ….anyone  & everyone who has almost no means of fighting back to right the wrongs done by this  “Screw you” administration?   I think it’s a safe bet to answer yes to that question.

Never before in the history of our country have we seen such brazen, in your face, don’t give a damn, dishonesty, cheating, lying and stealing by any one person or administration.   From 911 to Iraq to Halliburton it’s been one royal scam.  You know it, I know it and most of the world knows it.    The only people in the dark are the American people who have been consoled by YOU & a corporate owned media, among others, who know what this vile administration has done, is doing and will continue to do as long as they have the power of the presidency in their hands.  Don’t you care that our country, its good will and good name has been destroyed by this shyster Texan & will continue as long as he has any position of power?

I have talked to many people who have shared my high regard for you even when we opposed your politics.   You have destroyed our trust in you Senator McCain.  You mumble a few words about how dishonorable & dishonest the  so-called Swift Boat Veterans have been with their  nasty ads then you go right back to sucking up to George Bush.   Why?

You are condoning and participating in the attack on your “friend” John Kerry by the big, disgusting hugs you bestow upon the world’s most hated man.   By the way when I saw one picture of you hugging Bush with your head bowed on his slimy shoulder I almost vomited.    I’m sure that this thought has crossed Kerry’s mind on occasion…. With “friends” like you, who needs enemies?

****See Picture - The Kiss of Death ?

I’m truly trying to figure out what would make an honorable man turn on his country in order to help such a corrupt, self-serving person.  If you were Bill Frist, Tom Delay or Trent Lott, I would not even bother to ask a question because I would  already know the answer………

Are you being blackmailed?    OR has Bush promised you something so grand that you will betray your country to force this destructive person down America’s throat once again?   What is it Senator McCain, that causes you to love George Bush more than you love your country?

“This kind of irresponsible conduct cannot be allowed to continue.”  You said about the 527 groups.   What about the irresponsible conduct of one George Bush and the gang of thugs he has installed in this government of ours?

What about the brazen, ‘in your face’ corruption?    Honest elections?  Basic decency?  What about Democracy, Senator McCain?

What is it about George Bush that makes you sell your soul to Satan on his behalf?

My disgust with you is so profound that I feel like giving up on my country.  I can only hope that your conscience makes you feel as sick as I do about what you are doing to the United States of America.

There’s still time for you to decide that whatever is making you support the criminal, corrupt actions of one George Bush is just not worth it.    In your heart and in your soul you can make the decision that is good for the country & you know it’s not George Bush.

I am just one voice in this uproar over the illegal & illicit actions that have been taken in our names but I am one angry & disgusted voice.   There are millions more just like me.  I am still hoping that John Kerry will find his voice and once again rise up to protest this destructive administration.   Helen Thomas advised Kerry that “It’s time to protest again”.   She is correct.   I know  she would say much the same to you.

You cannot shirk your actions by trying to push it off on the 527 groups & the FEC.  Your actions are your own and for far too long you have been mute.  Make a choice John McCain…………. George Bush or your country.    It’s so very simple.

Finally - A Republican Congressman Says the War on Iraq Was Wrong... A day late and a dollar short as usual!

Lincoln, Neb. — A top Republican congressman has broken from his party in the final days of his House career, saying he believes the U.S. military assault on Iraq was unjustified and the situation there has deteriorated into “a dangerous, costly mess.”

“I've reached the conclusion, retrospectively, now that the inadequate intelligence and faulty conclusions are being revealed, that all things being considered, it was a mistake to launch that military action,” Rep. Doug Bereuter wrote in a letter to his constituents.

“Left unresolved for now is whether intelligence was intentionally misconstrued to justify military action,” he said.

Mr. Bereuter is a senior member of the House International Relations Committee and vice-chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. He is stepping down after 13 terms.

“From the beginning of the conflict, it was doubtful that we for long would be seen as liberators, but instead increasingly as an occupying force,” he said. “Now we are immersed in a dangerous, costly mess, and there is no easy and quick way to end our responsibilities in Iraq without creating bigger future problems in the region and, in general, in the Muslim world.”

Mr. Bereuter said as a result of the war, “our country's reputation around the world has never been lower and our alliances are weakened.”

Thanks Congressman.  Are we supposed to think that it's better late than never now that over 950 U.S. soldiers are dead, thousands wounded and many thousands of  innocent Iraqis are either dead, maimed, wounded, sick & homeless with their country bombed into a pile of rubble?  And YOUR bully pResident is still running rampant over anyone and anything that gets in his way.   I think that 'Thanks for Nothing' is a better response....editor

Senators Ask Where $8.8 Billion in Iraq Funds Went.
Reuters.

    Thursday, August 19, 2004.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - At least $8.8 billion in Iraqi funds that was given to Iraqi ministries by the former U.S.-led authority there cannot be accounted for, according to a draft U.S. audit set for release soon.

The audit by the Coalition Provisional Authority's own Inspector General blasts the CPA for ``not providing adequate stewardship'' of at least $8.8 billion from the Development Fund for Iraq that was given to Iraqi ministries.

The audit was first reported on a Web site earlier this month by journalist and retired Col. David Hackworth. A U.S. official confirmed the contents of the leaked audit cited by Hackworth (www.hackworth.com) were accurate..........

How many Children would 8.8 Billion  $$$$'s  Feed?  It's way past time for accountability!
